About

There are three distinct types of area for growing vines. The mountains, the plains and the coastal areas, with most of the vineyards situated to the north of the river Tejus (Tagus). Once known only for Port wines of the Douro Valley, the Vinho Verde wines of the Minho, its ungrafted Phylloxera free vines of Colares, and the wines of the island of Madeira that lies some 750 miles to the southwest in the Atlantic. In this last decade the modernisation of the country’s wine industry and the retention of its indigenous grape varieties has seen the creation of some 39 Denominação de Origem Controlada.
